In this segment, Dr. Jeffrey Epstein discusses advances in hair restoration with Drs. Edward, Kathryn and John Martin. Dr. Epstein is a board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has been a pioneer in new hair restoration techniques for the last 15 years.
In the past, hair plugs consisting of 10-20 hairs were implanted into the head, which resulted in a very unnatural, doll’s hair appearance. Now Dr. Epstein uses a technique whereby individual follicular units, called microscopic grafts, are implanted, giving a full natural appearance to the hair.
Dr. Epstein estimates that about 30% of his patients seeking hair restoration are now women. For many women, there may be hormonal abnormalities which result in hair loss, so a full medical work-up should be performed. While men tend to lose hair in a specific pattern, women usually get a more diffuse loss so that finding donor hair can be more difficult.
It is best to wait until a person is in their early to mid-20s to begin hair restoration. The average male will need about 2000-3200 grafts, and women somewhat less. The cost can be anywhere from $6000 to $14,000 depending on the amount of grafts needed. This may seem expensive, but the results are permanent.
In addition to the head, Dr. Epstein now also is able to restore hair to the eyebrow and eyelashes.
