In this segment Dr. John Martin will be discussing the health benefits of chocolate with his sister Dr. Kathryn Martin, and his brother Dr. Edward Martin.
For those of you who love chocolate, here is some great news! Eating a small amount of chocolate daily is actually good for you. It can improve heart health and keep cholesterol from clogging arterial walls. And small amount of dark chocolate seems to lower blood pressure.
Chocolate is made from refined cocoa beans. The cocoa contains flavanoids, which are plant based compounds that also are credited with giving red wine its heart-healthy benefits. Dark chocolate is the best for you, and you should look for at least 60% cocoa. One to two oz. daily is the recommended amount to eat. There are a lot of calories and sugar in chocolate, so eating too much could result in weight gain.
