In this segment Dr. John Martin discusses how to choose your cosmetic surgeon with his sister Dr. Kathryn Martin, and his brother Dr. Edward Martin.
There are physicians from several medical specialties who perform cosmetic surgery. These would include:
General plastic surgery
Otolaryngology - ENT - Facial plastic surgery
Ophthalmic Plastic surgeons
Dermatologists
The American Society of Plastic Surgery has had an advertising campaign which states that they are the only one trained properly to do cosmetic surgery. This is very misleading, since some of their training programs provide little or no cosmetic experience to their residents.
To help you choose a good cosmetic surgeon there are some things you should look into. Obviously a recommendation from another patient is important, since that allows you to see the work they have done. You can go to the physician’s website, which will explain their training, and often have before and after pictures which give you an idea of their aesthetic sense. The website will also inform you as to what societies they are members of, and whether they are board certified in their respective field.
When you go to see a physician for a consultation, make sure they spend enough time with you to answer all of your questions and concerns. And do not base your decision on the price alone. Cosmetic surgery is not inexpensive, and going to someone you don’t have complete faith in to save a few hundred dollars is not recommended!
